Aura. noun:
the distinctive atmosphere or quality that seems to surround and be generated by a person, thing, or place.
(in spiritualism and some forms of alternative medicine) a supposed emanation surrounding the body of a living creature and regarded as an essential part of the individual.
The word aura refers to the energy that we all have in and around us. The appearance of the
aura can change in accordance with our physical and emotional health at any given time.
Be it that strong or weak, bright or dull, light or dense.
This band of energy is always there and can be sensed around every living thing, plants, trees, animals, birds and people.
Have you ever found yourself feeling uneasy in the presence of a person? They seem friendly enough and you can't quite put your finger on it, but you know that something is off. Have you ever walked into a room filled with people and found yourself being overwhelmed by the varying energies emanating from all of the individuals in that room?
Then you might have been subconsciously picking up on the different auras.
The aura itself is split into 7 different layers and each of these layers coordinates with an area of the body, and to each of the major chakras.
Depending on which layer you are looking at it will show up as different colours and at different distances from the body, but the most visible to the human eye are the first three layers surrounding the human body. Auras can be seen with the eyes open or felt psychically with the eyes closed. Now, before we dive a little deeper into what the different layers represent and how to spot any imbalances, let's look at a few practices for you to learn how to see an aura.
Have your partner sitting in front of a plain wall.
Turn the lights down making the room nice and dark, and sit facing your partner with a small light shining only on them.
Begin to soften your gaze as you look at your partner. (If you are familiar with those magic eye books/images where you alter your gaze to see the 3D image then you should find that this part comes easily to you.)
Now ask your partner to hold one finger out in front of their face, approximately 15 cm away from their chin.
As they move their hand away, you must continue looking at that same area with a soft gaze. Don't follow the finger.
You will begin to see a fuzzy outline around your partner, at first you might find it difficult to maintain but with time it will get easier.
Don't have anyone to practice with? Then don't worry because here is an exercise for you to practice by yourself.
Begin by turning off any artificial lights, keeping the curtains open to allow natural light to enter the room.
Next, either lie down on your bed or sit in front of a plain wall, as far back as you are comfortably able to.
Stretch your arms out in front of you at full length, keeping them apart.
Soften your gaze as you look at them. (As stated above, if you are familiar with those magic eye books/images where you alter your gaze to see the 3D image then you should find that this part comes easily to you.)
Maintaining a soft gaze slowly move your hands closer to each other until they are almost touching one another.
You should now be able to see a cloudy haze around your hands. This is your aura!
So, what are each of the 7 layers called, and how do they relate to the 7 chakras?
The first layer of the aura is the Etheric layer and relates to the first chakra, the Root chakra, and the physical body. This layer is closest to the physical body and will reveal whether there is any physical disease happening in the body and often appears as either blue or grey.
The second layer of the aura is the Emotional layer and relates to the second chakra, the Sacral chakra. It resides 1-3 inches away from the body and can appear as any colour depending on how ones emotional state.
The third layer of the aura is the Mental layer and relates to the third chakra, the Solar Plexus. This layer is affected by a person's thought processes and mental state.
The fourth layer of the aura is the Astral layer and is connected to the person's fourth chakra, the Heart chakra. This layer can also be known as the Astral body. This layer is known to be the bridge between the bridge that connects spiritual and the physical. This is the layer where Astral travel occurs from.
The fifth layer of the aura is the Etheric Template and is connected to the 5th Chakra which is the Throat chakra. This layer extends to around 18 inches from the body and links to your psychic potential and abilities to create and manifest in the physical world.
The sixth layer of the aura is the Celestial Aura Plane and relates to the sixth chakra which is the Third Eye. This layer extends to around 24 inches away from the body, and is connected to your intuition and creativity.
The seventh and final layer is the Causal layer and relates to your seventh chakra, the Crown chakra. It is where energy is brought into the body via the top of the head and is the outside layer when you look at someone's aura. This layer pulls all the layers together and creates harmony within those ayers.
So that was a quick overview of the different layer that surround the human body. But what about when people say that they can see varying colours within a person's aura. What does this mean?
Below is a quick key to help you to gain a brief understanding of the different colours that can be seen around the human body and what they represent.

Aura Colour Meanings
Colours are an important aspect of aura reading. Below is a description of the meanings different colours hold. When reading auras be sure to always trust your intuition.
Black:
This can be a very misunderstood and concerning colour. There is no need to worry when you see black in someone's aura. The colour black generally means the person in question is shielding themselves from outside energies. They might be doing this for protection or they might have a secret of two that they don't want others to find out.
The colour black is a sign of imbalance and can often indicate that they have been through some form of abuse that they haven't yet healed. The black will remain until that person has dealt with and healed that trauma.
Blue:
There can be many different shades of blue within a person's aura. This is often a sign of a gifted person.
The shade and depth of the colour can have varying meanings. for example, a very deep blue is a sign that the person is honest, devoted and displays good judgement. A pale blue is a sign that someone is highly intuitive and/or creative. A turquoise blue suggests that a person is confident and self aware, while a muddy blue can be a clear sign that someone is suffering from depression.
Brown:
The colour brown can show that a person is going through a period of self growth. these people are often analytical, logical and organised.
Being an earthy colour brown can also show that someone is very grounded and connected to the earth, and in an extreme it can represent feeling stuck, stubborn or lacking in energy.
Gold:
Gold is the colour of spiritual energy and as such often represents a spiritual person who is very 'in tune' with themselves, and connected to their life's purpose.
Muddy gold is a sign that they are not really connected to their higher self.
Yellow:
Yellow represents an analytical person, and one who likes to think a lot. When the yellow colour is mainly visible around their heads it is a sign that the person is highly intelligent.
A yellow aura is also a sign of a balanced individual.
Green:
Green is a colour of sympathy, dependability and harmony.
Green is the colour of the healer and shows that someone has a lot of healing energy.
A muddy shade of green can be representative of a person who feels a lot of envy or jealousy - as in the saying 'green with envy'.
Grey:
Grey is the colour of creativity and intuitive abilities.
When the grey has a silvery look to it, this shows feminine energy.
A darker grey shows physical imbalances and that the person has secrets that they don't wish to share.
Orange:
Orange shows growth in a person both emotionally and psychically. A dull yellow is a sign that the person isn't sure about how to assimilate this growth, and a muddy yellow shows excess pride.
Pink:
Pink is the colour of love, devotion and honesty.
Pink can also shows that someone has a gentle, creative and artistic personality.
Dark pink shows that someone is immature, and a dull pink acts as a warning that someone is lying.
Purple:
Purple is the colour of intuition, and spirituality. In its darker shades can show a strong willed and passionate person.
Physically purple is a sign of strained muscles and a broken heart, (particularly if focused around the heart area.)
The person with a purple aura is likely to be very empathetic and are often introverted.
Red:
Red is the colour of passion and a fiery nature. Red can be representative of strong and extreme emotions and high energy.
A red aura can also act as a warning sign that someone is about to lose their temper!
